Becoming Battei

Progression from Kakuin, 'Associate', or a civilian is relatively simple. There is a two-week probation period when joining the Free Company. ie. The character must attend at least one social-event per week during this time period before they are able to be considered for the syndicate.

Once the two weeks have passed and the character has worked within the Onsen or have visited the social events as a guest twice during this period; the character may in-character apply to become yakuza by speaking with one of the family heads. If the character speaks with a Shateigashira or Wakagashira; they must additionally speak with the Oyabun of the family for full consideration.

When speaking with the Oyabun of the syndicate; the character will be given the family's link pearl, introduced to what the Arashi-gumi are in brief, expectations, history, and the family's Code of Ethics. It will be up to the new Battei to learn from his peers of what it truly means to be Arashi-gumi.

Becoming Shatei

Progression from Battei, 'Youngest Brother' to Shatei, 'Younger Brother' is much more in depth than Kakuin to Battei. The probation period between these two ranks varies individually from character to character. This may be anywhere from some weeks to some months. Tenure alone does not a Shatei-make.

During their time as a Battei, the character will be expected to learn what it means to be Arashi-gumi and all that entails. This includes, but not is limited to; indepth detailing of what the Arashi-gumi are, expectations of the brothers in the organization, its history, the Code of Ethics, combat & defense, accompany their brothers on various missions, Eorzean & Hingan laws, among other things.

Once a Battei is deemed fit by the Oyabun to proceed to the next rank they will be expected to perform the following:

REQUIREMENTS
• Abide by the Arashi's Code of Ethics
• Pass an In-Character 'written' assessment
• Pass an In-Character 'practical' assessment
• Attend their Sakazuki Ceremony
• Receive their Irezumi
• Cannot have a current infraction
Must have attended at least 1 DMed Event

A Note on the above: An assigned Kyodai or above must administer the Battei Assessments. Further, the Sakazuki may only be performed by the current Oyabun of the family. And finally, to receive their aetheric Irezumi the individual must receive their ink from the resident Irezumi Master; which must have a namazu, 'catfish' incorporated in some manner.

The above may be altered or changed by officers at any time.

Shatei Assessment

The Battei's process to become Shatei; requires two 'assessments' or 'exams'. It is expected of every potential Shatei to understand what it means to be Arashi-gumi by the end of their tenure as Battei.

As such, the Battei must show a competent proficiency in the following via. a formal 'written' exam.:

1. Eorzean and Hingan rule of the land section.
2. A short, personal 'essay'. This may include their thoughts upon the Arashi-code and how they incorporate it into their life, what they have learned since joining, and where they see themselves going from their current position, etc.

This exam is prepared and reviewed by the Oyabun, and is administered by the Gashira. Tests rotate and change as needed; preventing unfair cheating on exams. ICly they are not open-book exams.

Only those members who meet the previous page's criteria are accepted as Shatei.

The Shatei 'practical assessment' involves 1 task and is 'public' to the family. Unlike like the written portion; the 'practical exam' is administered by a Kyodai chosen by the Oyabun. The one administering the test must receive approval of their exam by the Gashira & Oyabun of the family. While each of these are individual; they are required to fill several goal-posts.

This 'practical assessment' must fullfill the following 3 objectives.

1. Combat proficiency
2. Ability to work within a team
3. Ability to follow orders

Additionally, Battei; May not fail any portion.

Unlike Kyodai-exams these are required to be roleplayed through and may not be a short story. As such, it is important to understand that these tasks are individual and may change as the wind seems wont to do.

Regardless of whom creates the assessments; they are approved by the FC Lead before they are assigned. These tasks must be completed within 1 OOC month according to the FC Lead.

Sakazuki-goto

Once a Battei has successfully completed their training and passed their assessments; they must now await the unspoken appointed hour in which they must complete their Sakazuki Ceremony. No one, but the Oyabun knows the appointed hour in which a Battei may take the final steps in officially becoming one of the family.

Upon the day of the Sakazuki Ceremony; the family will be called on to enter the room in which the ceremony is performed. Each member of the family must wear appropriate void-blue Hingan-garb emblazoned with the family's namazu Kamon.

The brothers of the family must take seat among each other; while the to-be Shatei are expected to sit in the traditionally kept zabuton for the Shateigashira and Wakagashira. These cushions are set adjacent to the Oyabun upon the raised tatami mat at the head of the assembly.

It is then, when all are present; that the ceremony may begin.
The Ceremony is of strict Hingan tradition and silence must be held over the proceedings; save the Atsukai; 'Moderator' who oversees the ceremony.

The highest-ranking Gashira will be expected to be the only speaker within the room as the Atsukai; 'Moderator'. Their task is to explain the ceremony's process and significance; as new brothers may be among those gathered.

The second highest-ranking Gashira will act as Shikan, 'Chronicler'. It is their task to prepare and pour a single choko of sake for the ceremony, assuming there is only one Shatei to be named.

Further, the Shikan's task includes giving proper offering to the Kami, deceased members of the Arashi-gumi and the deceased name-sake of the Arashi-gumi, once a Battei has become Shatei.

While we will not go into specifics concerning the ceremony here; as to keep it something of a surprise, you may read further into Sakazuki-goto and its significance within Japanese Culture at the following link: >Sakazuki-goto<

Irezumi

What are irezumi?: Yakuza tattoos, that are special and individual to each yakuza member. Many irezumi have intimate meanings to a yakuza member and they are never the same from member to member. They may have things like koi, dragons, geisha, etc.

For the Arashi-gumi's purposes the first irezumi the Shatei receives will be a namazu of some kind. It does not have to be the beastfolk-style and may be instead a far-eastern style catfish. It can be placed anywhere on the Shatei's body, except for their lower private portions.

Irezumi for Arashi-gumi: For the family, the irezumi are done with aetheric inks and will be done by an irezumi master Hattori no Kanekage. They are icly required to proceed forward beyond Battei-rank. Should a family member ever leave the Arashi-gumi they will aetherically fade with the loss of membership. However this is not known in-character. OOCly we would like to make it clear that this is not something that is permanent should your character depart the FC itself.

When Will it Happen?: The day after the Shatei's sakazuki ceremony. It may be rped out but this requires scheduling with Hattori. Alternatively it may be off-screened if preferred. You, the player, are welcome to commission an artist within or outside of the free-company for your characters' irezumi. Again; it has to be a namazu (catfish) and must ICly tattooed by Hattori.

Namazu?: Yep. Namazu. The first irezumi a Shatei receives is a namazu, it can be serious, edgy, cute or whatever you'd like. It is intimate to each individual family member.

For What Purpose?: Unification and ensuring that a potential yakuza member does not back out of their promised role. And because, let's just flat out admit, they're pretty badass looking.

Becoming Kyodai

While there is less pomp and circumstance as far as ceremonies are concerned from Shatei; 'Younger Brother' to Kyodai; 'Eldest Brother', there are several key points in which are important to the advancement of rank.

It is imperative to understand that Shatei to Kyodai is not a guarantee. Such positions are granted by the Oyabun only if the following are completed:

REQUIREMENTS
• Abide by the Arashi's Code of Ethics
Must be an active member of the family
Must have been with the family for at least 3 months
Must have attended no less than 4 DMed Events
Must have a clear understanding of being Arashi
Must have combat & defense training
Must have completed Irezumi
• Cannot have a current infraction
• Are required to take the Kyodai-assessment
• Are expected to help with the IC & OOC recruitment
• Are expected to renew their oaths to the Oyabun via. private sake-sharing

Kyodai are Elder Brothers of the family and have different expectations than that of their Shatei counterparts. First, they must be highly active both ICly and OOCly. Attending Social Events and DMed events on a regular basis is required. Tenure; while important is not the most important requirement of becoming Kyodai.

Kyodai are expected to have a distinct temperament for such a position. As such; immature characters, characters that constantly 'buck the system', or characters that create constant issues are not eligible to become a Kyodai.

Kyodai are expected to help IC and OOC recruitment; as such an online presence is very important as well as assisting Gashira with shouts in-game. Further; Kyodai are expected to give Shatei Assessments which are assigned by the Oyabun.

Finally, Kyodai may receive direct missions from the Oyabun or Gashira in which they may lead should a Gashira not be present for the given task.

The above may be altered or changed by officers at any time.

Kyodai Assessment

The Shatei's process to become Kyodai; while strenuous does not involve an in-character written assessment. It is expected of any potential Kyodai to completely understand what it means to be Arashi-gumi.

Kyodai must understand both Eorzean and Hingan rule of land. Due to these expectations, the Shatei is broached by the Oyabun or Wakagashira directly. Only those members who meet the previous page's criteria are accepted as Kyodai.

The Kyodai Assessment involves 3 tasks. Each are given to the Shatei by the Oyabun, Wakagashira and Shateigashira (If there are more than 1 in either position they will be rotated between).

These are mission-like tasks in which are individual to the aforementioned. As such; they may be anything from a knowledge task, combat task, assignment, or otherwise.

These may be either roleplayed through or a short story may be written and submitted to the appropriate channel in discord. As such, it is important to understand that these tasks are individual and may change as the wind seems wont to do.

Regardless of whom creates the assessments; they are approved by the FC Lead before they are assigned. These tasks must be completed within 1 OOC month.

Becoming Gashira & Onward

Becoming a Shateigashira and beyond has many requirements which must be fulfilled. First and foremost there must be a need for additional Shateigashira, Wakagashira, Oyabun, etc. Note; however these positions are OFFICER positions.

The requirements beyond the need for additional officers; are ultimately up to the Free Company Leader. Tenure alone is not cause for Officer-ship. This said; these are not publicly disclosed in full. However you may find just a few of these requirements below.

Kyodai- These individuals are senior members of the Arashi-gumi known as ‘Kyodai’ or ‘Big Brothers’.
